Jacksonville Jaguars – Commentary on coach Kevin Maxen’s outing: Hopefully a role model

Kevin Maxen, Strength and Assistant Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has publicly admitted his homosexuality. A big step that hopefully serves as a role model for many. One comment.

At heart, Jaguars coach Kevin Maxen’s outing shouldn’t be newsworthy. But it is. Because openly communicating homosexuality – especially in the male-dominated domain of professional sport – is by no means a matter of course. Unfortunately.

A glance at Twitter is enough to get an impression of the divided opinions of users. While some fully support the courageous step, others – mainly men – are unhappy about it.

With such reactions, it is hardly surprising that Maxen is so far the only male coach from one of the major US professional leagues who has publicly declared his support.

Coming out of Jaguars coach Maxen: No chance of discrimination!

Still the LGBTQIA community faces strong discrimination. In more than 60 countries, queer people face criminal prosecution, in some of them even the death penalty. For admitting to their sexuality. An image of humanity and an understanding of freedom like from the Stone Age.

Although Maxen does not have to fear prosecution by judicial authorities in the USA, there are probably reasons why he has waited so long to take this step. He no longer wants to lie and hide, but instead finally come out openly with his partner. Millions of other people probably feel the same way. In Florida, in the USA, worldwide.

We can only hope that Maxen can inspire many people with his coming out. Both inside and outside professional sport. That he receives the respect and esteem he deserves. And that the people who discriminate against people for their sexuality will rethink themselves and their view of the world.
