Buffalo Bills: Damar Hamlin launches social media challenge

It’s been just under a month since Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest and barely survived. Now the 24-year-old from the Buffalo Bills is creating a positive social media trend with his new challenge.

Football pro Damar Hamlin has launched a campaign for proper medical emergency behaviour a month after his cardiac arrest.

As part of a social media challenge, the 24-year-old is spreading information about the technique and application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in conjunction with the American Heart Association (AHA).

“3forHeart Challenge” involves three steps

This saved his life, “and it could save your life or the life of a loved one,” Hamlin said in a video he shared via Twitter.

The “3forHeart Challenge” involves three steps. Visiting the website Heart.org/3, there is a one-minute instructional video on what to do in an emergency, including chest compressions.

The second step is to donate to the AHA, and the third step is for participants to recruit three friends for the challenge. Hamlin immediately put the task in highly prominent hands. He nominated “the GOATs,” he said, the greatest: “Tom Brady, LeBron James and Michelle Obama.”

Defensive end Hamlin had suffered cardiac arrest on 2 January in his Buffalo Bills’ NFL main-round game at the Cincinnati Bengals, and had to be resuscitated on the field. He then spent a total of nine days in two hospitals.
