According to a report, “a handful” of NFL professionals, including cornerback and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers of the Indianapolis Colts, will be suspended for the entire 2023 season. The reason: gambling.

Apparently, a “handful of NFL players” will be suspended by the league for the entire upcoming season.

That’s according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. The only name the journalist mentions is cornerback and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers of the Indianapolis Colts.

That the NFL was investigating Rodgers had been known for some time. “I will take full responsibility for my actions,” the 25-year-old had written on Twitter earlier this month: “I know I made mistakes and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make things right.”

The cornerback allegedly operated a sports betting account that was in the name of a friend.

Rodgers allegedly placed as many as 100 bets and also wagered money on Colts games.

Players may not bet on NFL games

The NFL’s gambling rules, however, strictly prohibit players from betting on football league games. Likewise, it is forbidden to place sports bets on team premises or during away trips.

Engaging others to place bets is prohibited, as is sharing inside information.

Gambling: NFL suspended five players in April

Gambling guidelines are old news, but recently there have been repeated violations of them. As recently as April, the NFL suspended five players.

Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions and Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season.

Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams of the Lions each received a six-game suspension for betting on other sporting events on team property.

Calvin Ridley was suspended for one year

And then there’s the case of Calvin Ridley. The Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver was pardoned by the NFL in March after serving a one-year suspension. Ridley had bet on NFL games during his time with the Atlanta Falcons.

Which players besides Isaiah Rodgers will now be suspended for the entire upcoming season should be known in the next few days.
