San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has made a commitment on the quarterback issue. Rookie Trey Lance is expected to be the backup behind Jimmy Garoppolo. Shanahan is also surprised that discussions keep coming up regarding the issue. However, these do not come out of nowhere.

Munich – The quarterback discussion in San Francisco seems to be settled for now.

Apparently, there never really was one, either.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan explained at a press event that there is a very clear hierarchy and Jimmy Garoppolo is clearly number one. Rookie Trey Lance, on the other hand, is still playing second fiddle for the time being.

It is incomprehensible to the 41-year-old that questions keep coming up in this direction. Just a few weeks ago, he had made completely different statements.

Shanahan: “This is not the preseason “

To members of the media, Shanahan made one thing clear at the 49ers press conference, “Trey is our backup.” He said his statements a few weeks ago had apparently been misinterpreted.

During the Preseason he had still announced to play a so-called “two-quarterback-system”. That would have meant that both playmakers would be used throughout the season and there would be no clear number one.

But that apparently applied exclusively to preseason. “This is not preseason,” Shanahan made clear again. “We’re not going to rotate all the time. Trey will be used for specific plays we want to make. He’ll get better each week, but there’s not a big decision each time. We’ll create a game plan for our starting QB.”

Asked why he changed his mind on that, Shanahan explained, “I haven’t. We have to let him play and that’s what we do in certain situations. What I said in training camp, of course you (the media – ed.) can extend to the whole season if you want. But I think some words were put in my mouth that I didn’t say like that. “

But then why did Shanahan let both Lance and Jimmy G. suit up in the preseason finale? The answer is simple for the Head Coach, “It was the preseason, so why not? It also had a little bit to do with the team we then played the following week.”
