I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday. In speaking with some of you, it breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused. In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character. This is where I stand: I stand with the black community in the fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality and support the creation of real policy change that will make a difference. I condemn the years of oppression that have taken place throughout our black communities and still exists today. I acknowledge that we as Americans, including myself, have not done enough to fight for that equality or to truly understand the struggles and plight of the black community. I recognize that I am part of the solution and can be a leader for the black community in this movement. I will never know what it’s like to be a black man or raise black children in America but I will work every day to put myself in those shoes and fight for what is right. I have ALWAYS been an ally, never an enemy. I am sick about the way my comments were perceived yesterday, but I take full responsibility and accountability. I recognize that I should do less talking and more listening…and when the black community is talking about their pain, we all need to listen. For that, I am very sorry and I ask your forgiveness.

“Voglio scusarmi con i miei amici, i miei compagni di squadra, la città di New Orleans, la comunità nera, la comunità NFL e tutti quelli che ho ferito con le mie dichiarazioni di ieri. Parlando con alcuni di voi, mi spezza il cuore sapere il dolore che ho causato”, ha detto il 41enne su Instagram.

Ha cercato di parlare di rispetto, unità e solidarietà con particolare attenzione alla bandiera americana e all’inno nazionale, ma ha insensibilmente ignorato le questioni centrali che attualmente preoccupano il Paese.

Le sue parole mancavano di compassione e di empatia ed erano invece divisorie e dolorose. “Ho in qualche modo indotto la gente a credere che io sia il nemico. Questo non potrebbe essere più lontano dalla verità e non riflette il mio carattere e il mio cuore”.

La “vera posizione” di Brees nel dibattito
Brees fa anche diversi punti per mostrare la sua “vera posizione” nel dibattito:

“Sono a fianco della comunità nera nella lotta contro l’ingiustizia sistematica e la brutalità della polizia e sostengo il cambiamento della polizia che fa la differenza.

Condanno gli anni di oppressione che hanno avuto luogo nella comunità nera e che esistono ancora oggi.

Riconosco che noi americani, me compreso, non abbiamo combattuto abbastanza per l’uguaglianza e non abbiamo compreso appieno le difficoltà della comunità nera.

Riconosco che sono parte della soluzione e posso essere un leader della comunità nera in questo movimento.

Non saprò mai cosa si prova ad essere un uomo di colore o a crescere un bambino nero in America. Lavorerò ogni giorno per mettermi in quella posizione e lottare per ciò che è giusto.

Sono SEMPRE stato un alleato, mai un nemico.

Mi fa star male vedere come sono state ricevute le mie dichiarazioni ieri, ma prenditi la piena responsabilità. Dovrei parlare di meno e ascoltare di più… e quando la comunità nera parla del suo dolore, tutti noi dobbiamo ascoltare.

Per questo, sono veramente dispiaciuto e chiedo perdono”.
